FRETILIN wants consensus for independent and competent anti-graft commissioner head

FRETILIN wants to find a real solution, with consensus, for the appointment of someone who can commence the role of competently and effectively build the anti-graft capacity of the Anti-corruption Commission, we all voted for in the National Parliament.

Prior to the nomination being tabled in parliament, FRETILIN was not consulted with respect to any potential candidates.

FRETILIN continues committed to finding a Commissioner who will be able to do the job independently and competently.  It seems however, that the AMP in the parliament, led by the President of the National Parliament is resisting any consensus being reached.  This is counter-productive to our mutual aspirations of establishing an independent and competent anti-graft body to commence its much needed work as soon as possible.

Parliamentary President Fernando “Lasama” de Araujo said they did not need to have consensus with Fretilin in appointing commissary for leading the approved anti-corruption, as the law did not allow.

“We are talking about the law which only allows the Government to nominate its candidate for the commissary,” Lasama said.

Lasama stressed that they also talked about the content of the law in which it regulated the work of the commissary and said there was nothing about consensus.

Lasama called on PUN, PPT and KOTA benches to keep appearing in the Parliament to attend the Parliament’s follow up activities.

Fretilin wants Deputy PM Carrascalão to take up KAK commissary

Fretilin MP Aniceto Guterres said although they had not officially determined their nominee, but they prefer Deputy Prime Minister for Management and Public Administration, Mario Viegas Carrascalão to take up Commissary for KAK.

Guterres said they decided to continue absent from debating about the appointment for KAK’s commissary, as they wanted to reach consensus with the AMP.

Guterres stressed that it was important for the Government and other political parties in the parliament to have consensus with the nominee presented by Fretilin, adding that they [Fretilin] would never agree with Aderito de Jesus to take up the post.

“We have our own candidates, one is Deputy PM Carrascalão if he agrees to take up KAK’s commissary, but if he refuses then we still have another candidate that is Mr. Sebastião Ximenes in PDHJ, but it has not been formally decided yet by the party room,” Guterres said.
